Weak notes
Theme of this week is “recovery”. I’m through the covid but still easily tired. I’ve figured out I need to sleep sitting up to avoid my ribs murdering me, and with that adjustment they’re slowly improving.
With the boys we’ve been rebuilding out lego technic models (42120 Rescue Hovercraft and 42117 Racing Plane). We built the b-models of both and I think they’ve finally clicked on why it’s useful to keep the set’s pieces together.
Reading: I read Menewood, the just-published sequel to Hild. I absolutely loved Hild, and I’ve been waiting enthusiastically for Menewood: I wasn’t disappointed. It’s similarly immersive, beautiful, and engaging. The perspective moves out of Hild’s head occasionally, which gives us little glimpses of just how extraordinary she is in the eyes of the people around her. (And if it seems a wish-fulfillment fantasy to put so much strength and cleverness and charisma in a woman not yet twenty years old, an after-note on the historical record reminds us that Hild’s achievements were chronicled fifty years after her death, and that more than a millenium after she lived she is still venerated as a saint.)
