Looking for friends! (Upcoming.org)

Is anyone using Upcoming.org? I just signed up (as user tikitu, naturally), prompted by the awesome potential of Peter Oliver’s Upcomingscrobbler. As you probably won’t have guessed from the name, this site takes the top artists from your last.fm profile (driven by the Audioscrobbler engine — the light begins to dawn!) and cross-indexes them with upcoming events listed on Upcoming.org. In other words, it should tell you when bands you listen to are going to play in your hometown.

It doesn’t seem to be working entirely flawlessly yet. My only hit was for CocoaDevHouseAmsterdam, a meetup for Mac developers, and I’m pretty sure I haven’t listened to anything by them recently… still, there weren’t any false negatives, so I’ll keep hoping it works.

Anyway, the point is, I gave the Upcoming.org site a once-over, and even on its own it looks pretty solid. Another point in their favour: when I went looking for people I know, it told me:

No friends yet! See the note above for hints on how to find friends! Upcoming events and helpful advice! I’m sold.

So you actually found something in Amsterdam??? I recommended it to you because the potential is awesome. There is no critical userbase for Amsterdam yet so up until now i refrained from using it and decided to waste my time somewhere else. As I know now there is at least one compagnon in Amsterdam with good taste I'll give it a try soon ;)

btw ... what about a script which scrapes events from amsterdam.uitlijn.nl and the like, and automatically posts it to upcoming.org. Then let upcomingscrobbler notify me when it's time to go out. I love automation.

So far just the Fantastic Film Festivel next month, which I guess I would have heard about anyway. But, like you say: potential is great -- even just the upcoming site, but especially if the audioscrobbler tie-in gets going...

Script: well, what are you waiting for? Your branch of expertise ;-) Btw, there seem to be two separate Amsterdams on upcoming, one capitalised and one not. Confusing...
